Focus: Understanding Menopause and Its Effects

When menopause occurs, the choice for women to become pregnant is actually made by nature… It is a moment that doubting women – who are more inclined towards not having children – even look forward to. But it’s still not much fun. There is increasing attention to it in the media. Tonight – Thursday January 25 – at 8:55 PM you can watch Focus about the transition at NTR Science on NPO2.

Focus: the Transition

Lara Billie Rense talks to Dorenda van Dijken, Yolande Appelman, Iris Sommer, Herman Depypere, Patrick Calders and Manon Kerkhof about the consequences and treatment of the menopause. If women suffer from symptoms during menopause, a lifestyle intervention can help, but hormone therapy is also an option. At the University of Ghent, gynecologist Herman Depypere and physiologist Patrick Calders are investigating whether a combination of lifestyle intervention and hormone therapy might work best against menopausal complaints. Manon Kerkhof is a uro-gynecologist and has created a theater performance about menopause.

Interviewees

If you are curious about the interviewees from the Focus episode, we list them here. If you click on their name, you will discover even more interesting books on this theme.

More about the transition

Since I recently turned forty, menopause and premenopause are increasingly a topic of conversation. The podcast We are not crazy about Suzanne Rethans is also interesting to follow. But also think of books like The forbidden word (by Caroline Tensen) and Fuck Menopause by Liesbeth Gijsel. And how about the books by Isa Hoes and Medina Schuurman. In short: there is a lot to read for ladies who want to know more about this theme. This is especially nice if you are faced with unpleasant complaints or early menopause (due to illness).
