We (unfortunately) know the term from football, but in basketball such games are very unusual, at least in Germany. But two reasons led to the security precautions around the game in the Wilhelmsburg district being extremely tightened.
On the one hand, the political situation in the guests’ home country after the barbaric terrorist attacks by Hamas in Israel. The Hapoel team has been in Hamburg since last week, but this was kept secret as best as possible.
The Towers are in contact with security authorities to make the Israeli team’s stay as safe as possible. “The war has meant that particularly high security precautions have to be taken again when people travel from Israel. This is tragic, makes me sad and is a terrible circumstance,” says managing director Marvin Willoughby (45). And further: “Overall, however, the situation is pushing us to the limit of what is affordable.”

On the other hand, there is a history of the Towers vs Hapoel encounter from December 2022. Back then, the teams had already met, and the Towers won in extra time. Around 1,000 guest fans were in the stands – and set off pyrotechnics in the closed hall!
They were supported by supporters of FC St. Pauli because there is a fan friendship between the two camps. Willoughby: “The use of pyrotechnics and other fireworks in a closed hall and the associated fire risk is an incalculable risk.”

Therefore, security precautions have been tightened: visitors to the game are not allowed to bring bags of any kind into the arena. Only jerseys and scarves may be brought along as fan paraphernalia, but drums, flags or double holders are prohibited. In addition, visitors are not allowed to come back in after leaving the hall during the game.
In terms of sport, the Towers want to achieve a turnaround after recent weak performances. In the Eurocup, Hamburg are in last place in Group A with three defeats in three games.
