The FNV has received an ultimatum from its own staff. Negotiations for higher wages have stalled. The union must respond to workers’ demands before Monday (Labour Day), otherwise strikes will follow from Tuesday. The staff wants wages to rise in line with inflation.
“The union must set a good example. That means that inflation must be corrected and automatic price compensation must be introduced,” says FNV director Judith Westhoek, who negotiates on behalf of the staff.
According to Westhoek, hundreds of FNV negotiators in other sectors are also demanding that inflation correction. “And it is not the case that inflation has passed FNV employees by. Now is the time for our employer to put words into action.”
As an employer, the FNV has made a final offer for a new collective labor agreement in which wages will be increased by 3 to 7 percent from 1 May, depending on the level of the salary scale. At the beginning of 2024, the FNV would like to follow inflation with a wage increase of at least 5 percent.
In the following years, the FNV wants to implement automatic price compensation, but with a maximum of 5 percent. The staff does not consider this to be “real automatic price compensation”.
