FMD outbreak in Indonesia has major impact

Indonesia is not yet in control of the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak. Outbreaks have been reported in 20 provinces and 227 districts, affecting nearly 314,000 cattle. Estimates on the economic impact of the outbreak range from $1.37 billion to $6.6 billion a year due to production declines, livestock deaths and export barriers.

The Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture has set up a task force to combat FMD. A vaccination plan is in preparation. This requires approximately 30 million doses to be distributed throughout the country. A national campaign has also been launched for large-scale disinfection of stables, slaughterhouses and livestock markets.
