Flying may become more expensive: European Parliament wants to get rid of free emission rights in the sector from 2025

Airlines for Europe (A4E), an umbrella organization for European airlines, is “extremely concerned”. “In 2019, airlines spent 950 million euros on compliance with the ETS system. At the current carbon price of 80 euros per tonne, purchasing allowances for 100 percent of emissions in 2019 would amount to a cost of 5.2 billion euros .”

According to calculations by A4E, the ETS costs could even rise to 6 billion euros by 2025, an additional cost that will undoubtedly have to be paid (partly) by the customer. The organization therefore advocates an abolition of the free rights by 2030. “In this way, the European aviation sector can remain competitive with non-EU countries and the phase-out is better geared to the emergence of low-carbon alternatives,” said communications director Jennifer Janzen.
