This time the damage is greater. Willem-Alexander shows poor judgment with this holiday. Not the insight that the vacation plans themselves might not be such a good idea, but the reactions to his decision brought him to repentance.
That’s curious to say the least. Since March, almost all of the king’s work has been devoted to corona. He visited hospitals, but also catering, educational institutions and organizations for mental well-being. The king knows the consequences of the corona virus in his country. And the government he belongs to explains time and again how important it is for everyone to obey the rules.
Aversion also for Rutte
As long as it is not clear whether the prime minister has advised the king against the trip, not only Willem-Alexander but also Prime Minister Rutte will suffer damage. He is politically responsible for all acts of the Head of State, including private travel. Apparently other advisers of the king have not been able to deter him from this trip, or have insufficiently contradicted him.
But of course the king also has his own personal responsibility. Willem-Alexander has been king for over seven years now. Until now, he has mainly been praised for his role as connector. In the spring it came out that the king had purchased a speedboat worth more than two million euros. This trip to Greece underlines once again that his distance from society is considerable. It will be a job to regain its credibility as a connector.
