Victor Pacheco, president of the Dominican airline Flycana, explained that by allowing the Dominican air sector to operate under the free zone regime, they could have 13 international routes to the United States, Canada, Colombia, Panama and Cuba.
The founder of the low-cost airline project indicated that if they are included in the regime in a period of six months, they could be flying to the aforementioned destinations.
His request is leveled with the clamor of the Dominican Association of Air Lines (ADLA) who has requested the authorities to be allowed to operate under the free zone regime in force in the Dominican Republic, since if the current adverse fiscal environment of Dominican airlines changes, new internal routes could be opened to connect the country and international routes would be strengthened and expanded.
ADLA indicates that with the support of the Dominican government, national airlines can compete on equal terms with international airlines that operate in the country, and thus accelerate the recovery process of commercial aviation affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Its managers understand that in about 90 days they could start flying on the routes if they are allowed to operate under the free zone regime in force in the Dominican Republic, which would facilitate the final takeoff of Dominican aviation, clearing the obstacles that prevent them from being competitive.
In that sense, Omar Chahín, president of ADLA and of Air Century, expressed that the airline could offer internal routes from Santo Domingo a Santiago, Puerto Plata, Punta Cana, Barahona or Cabo Rojo and Montrecristi. As well as to the United States (Miami, Tampa and New York) and to San Juan, Puerto Rico, San José, Costa Rica and Honduras.
He expressed that Air Century has been reaching markets that are neglected by large airlines, such as Aruba, San Martin, Curacao and Cuba, and even Jamaica has met with them because they seek to have new routes to improve.
“It is important to boost the sector because it generates jobs in the country, contrary to a foreign airline,” he emphasized according to Hoy.
As an example, Chaín cited that his company before the pandemic had 160 employees and now there are only 60 and if the sector is promoted, the number of jobs would triple. In addition, the sector moves other subsectors of the economy.
