Flughafen Zürich AG reports a profit of 304.2 million francs (317.7 million euros) for 2023. The significant increase in earnings can be attributed to both the aviation and non-aviation business.
A total of 28.9 million passengers flew through Zurich Airport in 2023, an increase of 28 percent compared to the previous year. During the summer and autumn holidays, over 100,000 travelers per day were recorded at Zurich Airport on individual peak days. Compared to 2019, the number of passengers was 92 percent.
The number of flight movements in 2023 was 247,456. This means an increase of 14 percent compared to 2022. Compared to 2019, this corresponds to 90 percent. In 2023, a total of 377,998 tons of freight were handled at Zurich Airport. This is a decrease of 10 percent compared to the previous year and a decrease of 16 percent compared to 2019.
Total aviation revenue developed slightly below the growth rate in passenger numbers and rose from 491.1 million francs to 610.1 million francs (+24 percent). The background is the deeper increase in flight movements. Compared to 2019, aviation revenue was 92 percent.
Non-aviation income increased by 18 percent to 626.2 million francs in the reporting year, which corresponds to around 114 percent of the income in 2019.
Despite cost pressure, operating costs rose less than earnings. Overall, operating costs increased by 20 percent to 559.5 million compared to the previous year. Adjusted operating costs were around 7 percent higher than in 2019.
The operating result before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (Ebitda) increased by 121.2 million francs to 676.7 million francs compared to the previous year (+22 percent) and represents a new high. This is compared to 2019 Ebitda 5 percent higher.
The consolidated result for the past year increased by 47 percent to 304.2 million francs (previous year 207 million francs), which is almost as high as the profit in 2019. In total, Flughafen Zürich AG earned 437.7 million francs in the reporting year (previous year : 235.3 million francs), of which 226.6 million francs were invested in the Zurich location (previous year: 208.3 million francs).
Traffic numbers are expected to increase at the Zurich location this year. Around 30 million passengers are expected, which is approximately 95 percent of 2019 levels. Overall, Flughafen Zürich AG expects both higher earnings and a larger consolidated profit for the full year 2024 than in the previous financial year.
Due to the positive consolidated result in 2023, the previous payout ratio of around 40 percent of net profit will be maintained and distributed as an ordinary dividend. As in the previous year, in addition to the ordinary dividend, the distribution will be supplemented with an additional dividend from the capital contribution reserves. The Board of Directors will propose to the General Meeting that an ordinary dividend of 4 francs per share and an additional dividend of 1.30 francs per share be paid out.
