Flu Vaccines Reduce Influenza Cases in Europe, According to ECDC Report

The European Center for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) assures in its latest report that flu vaccines reduced the disease of patients with influenza A and B between 27 and 50%, in the European Union.

According to the report data, the percentage of positive samples peaked at 42% in the week of December 19-25, followed by a decline until the week of January 23-29, 2003, when it reached 22% of positivity. Following a rebound in February, threshold 10 was reached in the week of April 24-30, when the flu epidemic came to an end.

As detailed by the ECDC, last season marked the return of the flu to levels similar to those prior to the pandemic. This body indicates that this is due to an earlier onset of the seasonal epidemic and a comparatively earlier peak, at least compared to previous seasons.

In the samples analyzed through the PA sentinel networks, the dominant virus was A(H3N2), although a high presence was also observed, in relation to the previous campaigns of A(H1N1) and type B viruses.

On the other hand, in the samples detected in hospitalized patients, A(H3N2) also predominated. Type A influenza viruses have been dominant among patients.
