Flu Vaccination Begins in Sancti Spiritus Province – Over 20,000 People to Receive Dose

As of this August 28, flu vaccination will begin in stages in all the municipalities of the province, a process in which more than 20,000 people from Spirit will be immunized.

As explained to Escambray Dr. Agnie Fernández González, a specialist in Hygiene and Epidemiology and provincial adviser to the Acute Respiratory Infections and Tuberculosis program, the vaccine —which will consist of a 0.5 ml dose intramuscularly in the deltoids— will be applied to various risk groups.

“One hundred percent of the population 85 years of age and older will be vaccinated; to all patients institutionalized in grandparents’ homes, nursing homes and psycho-pedagogical centers; to all pregnant women, regardless of the trimester of pregnancy and maternal age; poultry and livestock workers and those in the health sector.

“The vaccine will also be administered to all patients over six years of age with Childhood Cerebral Palsy and cystic fibrosis, chronic psychiatric patients who are admitted to hospitals, and asthmatics and diabetics from 19 to 24 years of age. age”.

Those who are included in the vaccination, clarifies the source itself, at the time of administering the product cannot suffer from known allergies, acute febrile states, aggravation of chronic diseases or acute viral respiratory infections. If you present any of these pathologies, you should wait until you recover from the disease to get vaccinated.

According to Fernández González, the flu vaccination will take place in the official vaccination centers of the municipalities and, in addition, other points will be set up in the different health areas, taking into account the risk groups to be vaccinated.

This vaccine, which is applied only once a year, is specific against type A and B influenza viruses and, according to specialists, the antibodies appear after eight to 12 days of application and last for a period of 12 months.

Previously, in the month of July in the province, different pediatric age groups were also vaccinated against influenza: all children from six months of age up to one year, 11 months and 29 days; asthmatics who are in the range from two years to 5 years, 11 months and 29 days and vulnerable patients because they suffer from a disease.
