Flu Shot for Pregnant Women: Safety and Benefits for Mother and Baby

Newborn babies have a higher risk of serious consequences of flu, such as hospitalization. That is why women who are 22 weeks or more pregnant between October 15, 2023 and March 1, 2024, can get the flu shot at the health clinic.

The above does not apply to pregnant women with a medical indication. They can get the flu shot from their doctor.

Safe for baby and mother

If the mother gets the flu shot during pregnancy, the baby is less likely to get the flu right from birth. The flu shot is also useful for the pregnant woman herself.

Pregnant women with flu are admitted to hospital more often than women with flu of the same age who are not pregnant. The flu shot is safe for the baby and mother and can be combined with the 22-week shot against whooping cough.
