The Netherlands will investigate whether and how the annual flu vaccine can be combined with the corona vaccines. The Radboudumc university medical center in Nijmegen is starting a study with the cooperation of people over 60. There is also evidence that the flu shot also provides “some form of protection” against the coronavirus, the center said.

Now that there are gradually more indications that a third corona jab is indicated, Radboudumc wants to find out how this can be combined with the annual flu vaccine. “Do the vaccines reinforce each other or not? Which order of vaccination produces the most antibodies against the coronavirus? And can we give the injections at the same time, or should there be a certain period in between? These are questions we want answers to,” says Professor of Internal Medicine Mihai Netea. The study is funded by the government and will start next month.

The center is still looking for people over 60 for the study. Participants must have been fully vaccinated against corona more than four months ago.
Pharmaceutical companies are also researching combination vaccines. The American Moderna announced on Thursday that it was working on a single shot that works both as a corona booster and against the flu. Competitor Novavax has started a study in Australia in which participants are injected with a combination of a flu vaccine and a corona vaccine.
