Flu Season Forecast: Expert Warns of Potential Surge
A leading health expert is sounding the alarm about a potential surge in influenza cases across the United states, mirroring recent trends observed in parts of Eastern Europe. Following a relatively quiet December, a meaningful increase in flu activity is anticipated in the coming weeks.
Professor Todor Kantarjiev, in a recent interview, stated, “In December we had a lower spread of respiratory infections, we expect an increase now. In Romania, there is a lot of increase in flu cases. The flu is spreading the fastest in Russia, Moldova and Romania, and maybe it will be our turn.”
Kantarjiev’s prediction points to a peak in flu cases sometime between late January and early February. He clarified, “The peak is expected either at the end of January, as usual, or at the beginning of February. What does peak mean? This is the period when there are the most cases in the shortest time. It is expected that two weeks after this peak, the cases will decrease.”
The professor emphasized the importance of recognizing flu symptoms early. ”When you get sick, it manifests itself up to the 24th hour. Maybe on the fourth day,but very rarely. The symptoms are high fever, throat irritation, muscle and joint pain, you don’t want to get out of bed,” he explained. He also stressed the importance of prompt medical attention and treatment: “If you promptly take an anti-influenza drug prescribed by a doctor, the symptoms rarely decrease the very next day. Otherwise, with claims of anti-influenza – a lot,” he added.
Beyond medication, Kantarjiev also highlighted the role of diet in bolstering immunity. He advised, “Smart people consume pickles, sauerkraut. These are the best traditions of our national cuisine that have preserved us for centuries. If we have the opportunity, it is indeed good to consume fruits. It is good to take vitamin D as well, but not in large quantities and intermittently, becuase otherwise we burden the liver.” This advice aligns with broader recommendations for a healthy diet rich in vitamins and antioxidants to support the immune system.
As flu season intensifies, health officials urge Americans to practice good hygiene, get vaccinated, and consult their doctors for any concerns.
