UTRECHT (ANP) – There is officially a flu epidemic in the Netherlands. This is the conclusion of Nivel, Erasmus MC and the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) based on figures for the number of people who went to the doctor with flu. It can be seen that the number of corona cases continues to decrease, as previously shown by measurements in the sewage water.
Last week, about 70 patients out of 100,000 inhabitants went to the doctor with flu complaints. That is more than a week earlier and above the limit at which there is a flu epidemic. The week before, the number of patients with the flu was just below that limit.
The last time so many flu cases were registered was in January last year, according to the RIVM.
Elderly patients
The number of corona patients has fallen to 20 per 100,000 inhabitants. This virus is relatively common among older patients. The number of people who tested positive in hospitals fell to below 300 on Wednesday. According to the National Coordination Center for Patient Distribution (LCPS), hospitals are now treating 283 people with corona, the lowest number since October 6. A month ago, around Christmas, there were more than 850 corona patients in hospitals.
The number of virus particles in sewage water has fallen sharply since the end of December. The concentrations are now at the lowest level since October, the RIVM reported on Wednesday. This indicates that there are actually fewer corona infections.
