Flu Epidemic Enters Fourth Week, Increase in Pneumonia Cases

UTRECHT (ANP) – The flu epidemic has now lasted four weeks. Last week, 69 patients per 100,000 inhabitants went to the doctor with flu complaints, according to figures from the Nivel research institute. That is slightly less than a week earlier, but the number is still above the limit value for a flu epidemic.

The figures are appropriate at this time of year, says a spokesperson for the National Institute of Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). In general, more people with flu go to the doctor in the winter and autumn months.

There have also been a remarkable number of patients with pneumonia since August. The numbers are particularly striking among children and young people. The RIVM reported last week that this is caused by various viruses and bacteria that are circulating. The increase in patients requiring hospital admission appears to have peaked. In Wednesday’s Nivel figures, the total number of patients with pneumonia remains approximately the same as in the previous weeks.
