The flu can cause serious complications, including swelling of the brain or lungs. Sergei Voznesensky, an infectious disease specialist and associate professor of the Department of Infectious Diseases at the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (RUDN), told the Moscow City News Agency about this.
“The influenza A virus is an acute respiratory viral infection. The disease manifests itself as fever, intoxication, runny nose, and cough. There can be two groups of complications from influenza, the first is related directly to the virus itself – this can include pulmonary edema and respiratory failure and cerebral edema,” said Sergei Voznesensky.
The second group of complications is the addition of secondary bacterial flora, various bacterial pneumonia, sinusitis and other bacterial complications. Without treatment, the probability of death can average about 1%, the doctor emphasized. The medical specialist also reminded that you can protect yourself from the flu through vaccination.
“Seasonal vaccination has been available to all citizens of the Russian Federation since September. If anyone has not yet been vaccinated, I strongly recommend this procedure. I recommend to others not to forget the experience that we have gained thanks to COVID-19 – masks, hand washing, distancing,” the doctor added.
