Unknown people have smeared a memorial to the African American George Floyd killed in a police operation in New York with black paint.

Unknown people have smeared a memorial to the African American George Floyd killed in a police operation in New York with black paint. The New York police said “Patriot Front”, the name of a neo-Nazi group, was found on the almost two-meter-tall bust on Thursday. A racially motivated background to the crime is being examined.

Authorities released a video Thursday showing four people near the Floyd Memorial in the Brooklyn neighborhood. One of them is holding an aerosol can. The memorial was only inaugurated last Saturday, a good year after the death of the African American in a police operation in Minneapolis on May 25, 2020.

On Friday, the sentence will be announced against the white police officer Derek Chauvin, who at the time held the knee of Floyd, who was arrested on charges of counterfeit money, for around nine and a half minutes, although the latter repeatedly complained that he could not breathe.

“I say very clearly to the neo-Nazi group that did that: Get out of our state,” wrote the governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, on the online service Twitter. The group is also suspected of damaging another memorial in Newark, New Jersey.

Chauvin’s act and a video of Floyd’s death made headlines around the world and sparked nationwide protests against racism and police violence against blacks in the United States.
