The 55-year-old, who inhaled carbon monoxide in a hotel in the area of Limnochorio in Amyntaio in Florina, is fighting a hard battle to stay alive and is being treated in the ICU of Mamatseio Hospital in Kozani. Meanwhile, the 53-year-old man in charge of the hotel in Amyntaio, Florina, where the poisoning of 14 people took place after midnight on Saturday, is being brought before the prosecutor today.
A preliminary investigation into the exact causes of the leak has been undertaken by the Amyntaio police station
His condition is considered critical. According to the president of POEDIN, Michalis Giannakos, “the 55-year-old is responding to stimuli, but suffered cerebral edema. The swelling and the anoxia he suffered must be absorbed, and then we will see if his body will function normally or if it will suffer damage.”
Speaking to MEGA, he noted that “he is in critical condition”.
“Sneaky Gas”
As reported by Giorgos Mantsos, director of the Florina hospital, nine patients were transferred to the Florina hospital, while the remaining five patients were transferred to the Ptolemaida hospital.
“Carbon monoxide is an insidious gas. It is odorless, tasteless and the first reaction is loss of consciousness. When they came to the hospital, some had loss of consciousness, tendency to vomit and malaise,” explained Mr. Mantsos.
The Hotel was sealed
A total of 14 tenants of the hotel in Florina were poisoned by the carbon monoxide leak.
It all happened late on Saturday night with visitors feeling unwell, nauseous and dizzy.
A couple from Thessaloniki reported that they initially thought it was food poisoning, but opened the windows and felt better. The incident was more serious for the occupants of other rooms, where the police and fire brigade had to intervene, as they broke down a door to free the guests.
Two fines of more than 10,000 euros (2,024 + 8,192) were imposed on the hotel after the poisoning incident, while yesterday the Head of the Western Macedonia Public Health Service issued a decision to stop the operation of the tourist accommodation, informing all the competent control authorities.
The gas leak scenarios
There are varying scenarios as to what caused the gas leak. The possibility that the exhaust gas pipe from the boiler, which was placed low in the building, carried the monoxide from the ventilation system, is being investigated as one of the possible causes of the poisoning.
A week ago, the regional tourism directorate of Western Macedonia had imposed a fine of 10,000 euros for inaccurate and untrue information that had not been filled in the license file issued in 2017, but this information had nothing to do with the accident.
The investigations of the authorities into the causes of the incident are focused on the escape pipe of the gases from the combustion in the boiler, which was placed low in the building and possibly these gases entered the ventilation system.
It is noted that the hotel had remained closed for some time. It reopened after a full refurbishment a month ago, on September 13, and reportedly had a new gas boiler. The 53-year-old owner was arrested and a case was filed against him for common dangerous damage and for negligent bodily harm.
A preliminary investigation into the exact causes of the leak has been undertaken by the Amyntaio police station.
