A thirty-six-year-old man was arrested yesterday afternoon in Florina for telephone fraud, while his accomplices are being sought.
Specifically, the 36-year-old between 20-04-2024 and 26-04-2024 in the areas of Grevena and Florina attempted to defraud seven citizens in Florina, while he managed to defraud an 82-year-old woman in Grevena by telephone.
The arrested person had the role of “collector”, while for the same case they are looking to identify his accomplices, against whom a case file was filed for the offenses of fraud and criminal organization
The perpetrators presented false events as real, in order to extort large sums of money and valuables from the victims.
In particular, seven citizens in Florina received phone calls from a man and a woman, who pretended, the man to be a doctor or a policeman, and the woman to be their relative or friend, as the case may be, and under the pretext that this person had either suffered serious injury and needed immediate surgery, or had caused a fatal traffic accident, to avoid the alleged legal consequences, they required large sums of money.
The citizens, perceiving the attempted fraud against them, informed the police authorities, who identified and arrested the thirty-six-year-old perpetrator.
The sum of 240 euros, 2 gold pounds, 2 gold neck chains, 1 gold cross, a mobile phone with a sim card, as well as the car in which he was riding were found and confiscated in his possession.
From the preliminary investigation, it was established that the aforementioned, in an identical manner, managed to defraud, on 04-20-2024, during the midday hours, an 82-year-old woman in the city of Grevena, from whom they extracted the sum of 1,000 euros, 2 golden pounds, 3 gold neck chains and a gold cross.
The seized money and gold were found to belong to the 82-year-old woman, to whom they were attributed.
Investigations continue to identify at least two more people, accomplices of the 36-year-old, while their participation in other similar criminal acts is being examined, as well as the identification of any other victims.
The arrested person was taken to the Criminal Prosecutor’s Office of Florina.
On the occasion of the above incidents, the General Regional Police Directorate of Western Macedonia reminds citizens to be cautious in such cases and to inform the authorities immediately
