Florida Woman Hit and Paralyzed by NYC Bus Awarded $72.5 Million in Compensation

NEW YORK (AP) — A Florida woman who was hit and dragged by a New York City bus, leaving her partially paralyzed, could receive $72.5 million in compensation after suing the transportation agency. from the city.

A jury found in favor of Aurora Beauchamp, now 68, who was hit by a Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus on Manhattan’s Lower East Side in March 2017. She was crossing the street when she was hit by the bus that hit her. it dragged for about 6 meters (20 feet).

Beauchamp, who grew up in the area of the accident and now lives in Bradenton, Florida, suffered severe pelvic injuries and his left leg was paralyzed. She told the New York Post on Saturday that she was going to her mother’s apartment to discuss her uterine cancer diagnosis when the bus hit her.

“I’ve crossed that street 100 million times, I was feeling good, and suddenly I’m under a bus trying to stay alive,” she said.

The six-member jury deliberated less than three hours before announcing its decision on February 22. Beauchamp’s attorneys said the compensation appears to be one of the largest ever awarded for a city bus accident.

The transportation agency will appeal the decision, spokesman Tim Minton told WPIX-TV, which first reported the decision.

“This is another example of how excessive compensation in personal injury litigation affects money that could be used to provide better transportation service,” he stated.

The driver of the bus that hit Beauchamp pleaded guilty to failing to yield to a pedestrian, the Post reported.
