On the night of Saturday, local time, police in Polk County in Mulberry, Florida received reports of children crying from a wooded area.
When they arrived at the scene, they found a little newborn girl wrapped in a blanket. The little girl – still attached to the placenta, had probably seen the light of day only an hour earlier. This is stated by the local police chief in a press release, reproduced by, among others, the news agency AP News.
According to the police, the temperature stick showed a pitiful 11 degrees and the clock was only a couple of hours past midnight.
Missing 15-year-old found in assault case
Police Chief Grady Judd stated after the incident that it was luck that they found the abandoned girl before she was further exposed to either the cold or any animals. The girl was taken to hospital where she was found to be healthy and stable.
– She was left in an extremely vulnerable situation, but she is a strong little girl and it seems that she is doing well, Judd said in the press release.
Both drones and dogs were used in the area to search for the mother, but without success.
Warns after child deaths: – New chapter
On Sunday, the police office posted a video from a press conference on their own Facebook pages where they say that they still haven’t found the mother, but that the girl is safe.
Police chief Judd says he believes the girl was left in the forest to die, and will investigate the case further.
– We do not know if the child was born in the forest, or if she was taken to the forest after the birth.
In Florida, there are rules that newborns can legally be left outside fire stations and health centers for up to a week after they are born.
