Seven months after supporters of former President Donald Trump stormed the United States Capitol, more than 500 people have been arrested and charged in federal court for their alleged role in the riots. Most of the arrests took place in Florida, followed closely by Texas and Pennsylvania.

Main facts

  • Florida has been the scene of more Jan. 6-related arrests than any other state, with at least 56 arrests in the Sunshine State so far, according to a U.S. Department of Justice follow-up.
  • Texas comes next, with 55 people indicted in connection with the assault on Capitol Hill. In total, more than 20% of those charged with federal riot related crimes were arrested in Florida or Texas.
  • Pennsylvania is third so far with 47, followed by New York at 41 and Ohio with 27.
  • The site with the highest number of arrests per capita is Washington, DC, with 24 arrests, followed by Montana with 5 and Pennsylvania.
  • The states where only one person has been charged are Hawaii, Alaska, Nebraska, Mississippi, and Connecticut, where only one person has been charged with a federal felony in each state.
  • The following states have not been charged in federal court in connection with the January 6 riots on Capitol Hill: North Dakota, South Dakota, Rhode Island, Vermont and Wyoming.

Important figure

More than 570. That’s the number of people who were arrested for crimes committed on Capitol Hill in January, the US Department of Justice said last week. More than 170 have been accused of assault or obstructing the action of the police, the agency said.

Surprising fact

After the FBI asked the public for help in identifying people who may have committed crimes on Capitol Hill on January 6, some suspects were reported by people they knew, after those suspects themselves posted information on social media about their participation in the riot. Several of them had even posted compromising evidence on online dating platforms like Bumble.

The context

The DOJ is still identifying and arresting the rioters, and some individuals who have been arrested or charged may not yet appear on the agency’s tracker. The suspect’s place of arrest is not always indicated in cases appearing in the agency’s tracking system. Each person on the list is prosecuted by the United States attorney’s office for the District of Columbia. Last month, a Florida man named Paul Allard Hodgkins became the first person to be sentenced to jail for the riots and he will serve an eight-month sentence.
