A 60-year-old teacher from Florida has to answer for child abuse in court, as the news portal “Jacksonville.com” reports. Just recently she was named teacher of the year by her school. Due to a dispute over Instagram, the teacher is said to have hit a student until her nose was bleeding. The police are currently investigating the exact circumstances of the case. The 60-year-old was taken into custody on Friday, according to local officials.

In a published police report it can be read that the teacher allegedly acted violently against a pupil in the lower school. She told the student that she wanted to talk to her privately in the classroom, even though the 60-year-old does not teach the child at all. According to a police officer, a surveillance video of the school showed how the teacher had previously gone to the classroom “at an aggressive pace”.

When the two were alone, the teacher is said to have leaned over a table and asked why the student threatened her on Instagram. When the student said no, the teacher slapped her face. The student’s nose began to bleed, but she continued to hit her, according to the report. According to her own statement, the student tried to fix the teacher’s arms in order to prevent further blows. But she continued and instead kicked the student’s shin.
Student criticized teacher on Instagram for using the N word
According to the police report, a comment by the student on Instagram under the nomination of the 60-year-old as “Teacher of the Year” is said to have given rise to the dispute. School is shocked: “No tolerance for violence against children”
The 60-year-old was arrested on Friday for the incident. The school management was horrified. She sent a message to all parents to inform them of the incident. “It is very disappointing, but I have to inform you that one of our teachers was arrested today on suspicion of child abuse. Even more disappointing is the fact that that teacher was recently named Teacher of the Year,” said the headmaster in the letter.
The school’s chief director also wrote in a public statement that she has no tolerance for adults who harm children, especially when they hold a position of trust. The teacher was suspended from school. The police investigation is still ongoing.
