Cruz committed the massacre on February 14, Valentine’s Day. He shot his victims in the hallways and classrooms of Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School. Cruz had been expelled from this school a year earlier after a history of threats, intimidation and violent behavior.
The Parkland school shooting sparked the March for our Lives movement, in which students across the United States took to the streets to advocate for tougher gun laws nationwide. Cruz had legally purchased the weapon he was using, an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle, from an authorized gun dealer.
