Florida, new epicenter of the pandemic, registered this Thursday a new record diary of dead by COVID-19, with 156 in the last 24 hours, so that a total of 4,782 people have died in that state since the first case was detected on March 1.
Additionally, hospitals are at the limit with 83.7% of beds occupied in intensive care units, the Florida Department of Health reported.
The situation is especially critical in Miami, the second most populous city in the state, where hospitals are at 95%, the mayor of the city, Republican Francis Suárez, detailed on Thursday.
Suarez reiterated the possibility of a new confinement and closure of businesses, a measure that “would be the last option”, but that is on the table.
“I think it is important that we communicate with the business community before making any decision. If something is not done in the coming weeks to alter our course, we could be in a serious situation,” warned the councilman, who will meet Friday with the business community.
In total, 39 of the 50 states have seen the number of cases grow this week compared to the previous one, according to data from the Universidad Johns Hopkins.
According to the same source, in absolute terms, the United States is the country in the world most affected by pandemic with more than 3.5 million cases and 138,000 deaths.
New infections of coronavirus
U.S beat this Thursday a new record of daily covid-19 infections, with more than 68,000 cases, according to the Johns Hopkins University count.
At 20:30 (0030 GMT on Friday), infections in the previous 24 hours amounted to 68,428 and deaths to 974, raising the balance since the start of the pandemic to 3,560,364 cases and 138,201 deaths, respectively.
U.S it remains in absolute terms the country most affected by the pandemic in the world.
Experts believe it never emerged from the first wave of infections, and cases have resurfaced in recent weeks, particularly in the southern and western states of the country that pushed to lift restrictions early.
