A Fresh Hurricane Threat Looms Over Florida
Less than 10 days after Hurricane Helene made landfall, Florida faces yet another alarming situation as a new potential hurricane is forming in the Gulf of Mexico.
Formation of Tropical Storm Milton
The National Hurricane Center reported that Tropical Storm Milton emerged in the western Gulf on Saturday morning, following its transition from a tropical depression. It is the 13th named storm to form this hurricane season, arriving well before the average date of October 25.
Potential Strengthening of the Storm
Forecasts suggest that Milton is likely to strengthen as it moves over the Gulf, posing life-threatening conditions to areas on the west coast of Florida next week. The storm is on track to reach major hurricane status by the time it impacts the Florida coastline mid-week.
Impending Weather Warnings
Hurricane watches and storm surge alerts are expected to be in place for various sections of Florida as early as Sunday. Following Helene’s devastation, a dangerous storm surge is anticipated in certain regions already affected by the recent storm.
Potential for Heavy Rainfall
Regardless of how Milton develops, heavy rainfall is expected in Mexico over the next couple of days, as well as across much of Florida from this weekend through the middle of next week, as reported by the hurricane center.
Impact from Hurricane Helene
The looming threat of Milton arises after Helene’s landfall on September 26 as a Category 4 hurricane, which resulted in a 500-mile swath of destruction across Florida. The impact has led to over 200 reported fatalities across six states, raising concerns that this figure could grow.
Rainfall Accumulations and Surge Risk
Current forecasts indicate widespread rainfall totals of 4 to 6 inches could blanket much of Florida from Gainesville to Key West, with the potential for higher amounts nearing 10 inches. Tampa has already recorded over 20 inches of rainfall above its average for the year, while several cities, including Melbourne and Jacksonville, are over a foot surplus for the year.
Storm Surge and Additional Risks
The risk of storm surge for the western Florida Peninsula is anticipated to rise by late Tuesday or Wednesday. Additionally, the upcoming week may bring damaging winds, tornadoes, and waterspouts.
Monitoring and Preparedness
The hurricane center is urging residents in the Yucatan Peninsula, Florida Peninsula, Florida Keys, and the Bahamas to keep a close watch on the developments this weekend and the beginning of next week.
