People in the US state of Florida are preparing for the arrival of Hurricane Helene. The storm is expected to make landfall on Thursday as a category three hurricane. Life-threatening storm surges could occur along the entire west coast of Florida and in the Big Bend region in the north of the state, the US Hurricane Center said. Dangerous hurricane-force winds are also expected in the south of the neighboring state of Georgia.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in 61 counties as a precautionary measure and activated 3,300 members of the National Guard. They have been deployed to assist in rescue operations with special vehicles and from the air, clearing roads and distributing goods, said Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh.

State of emergency also in Georgia

It is expected that the states of Georgia, Alabama and North Carolina will also activate the National Guard in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Evacuations have been ordered in several places. People must complete their preparations to protect lives and property as soon as possible, the hurricane center warned. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp also declared a state of emergency in all counties in his state.
