Florida: Passenger train runs over man on tracks

A Florida high-speed passenger train ran over and killed a man walking on the tracks, weeks after the company reopened after the pandemic.

The Brightline train struck the pedestrian Tuesday morning in North Miami Beach.

The man did not react when he heard the train’s horn, officials said.

Local police did not immediately respond to a request for further details.

This was at least the 49th death in which a Brightline company train was implicated since the Miami-to-West Palm Beach line began operating in mid-2017 and the first after a 19-month shutdown due to the pandemic. In July, a Brightline train killed a cyclist.

An examination of federal records by The Associated Press revealed that Brightline has more fatal accidents per mile than any other railroad in the United States, one every 31,000 miles (50,000 kilometers). Since 2018, around 1,200 people have been killed each year by trains.

None of the deaths Brightline was involved in were attributed to its rolling stock or operators.

Investigations revealed that most of the victims were suicidal, mentally ill, intoxicated or had crossed barriers in an attempt to beat the train, which runs at 79 mph (128 kph) through densely populated areas.
