ORLANDO, Fla. – Florida topped New York this weekend as the state with the second-highest number of coronavirus cases in the United States, as 9,300 new cases were reported in the Sunshine State on Sunday, and there had 78 new deaths.
Florida’s 423,855 coronavirus cases are only surpassed by California’s 453,659 cases. With 39.5 million people, California has almost double the population of Florida of 21.4 million. California is the most populous state in the country, followed by Texas, Florida, and New York.
New York, once the epicenter of the virus in the United States, had 411,736 cases of the coronavirus. The state has 19.4 million inhabitants.
As of Sunday, 9,344 new cases were reported in Florida. The number of new cases was lower than on other days last week, but the number of cases published on Sunday tends to be lower due to fewer workers entering data or working in labs that test samples.
The median age of coronavirus patients across Florida is 40 years old.
Nearly 3.4 million Floridians have been tested for the virus. New cases tested over the weekend had an 11% positive rate, according to the Florida Department of Health.
Florida also recorded a total of 8,951 hospitalizations related to the coronavirus on Sunday.
