A man in Florida, United States, can finally breathe freely again. He had difficulty catching heat due to hundreds of insects that apparently lived in his nose. How come?
The man, whose identity was not revealed, began to feel that something was wrong with his body in October 2023. He thought the condition was influenced by neuroblastoma, which he had suffered from 30 years ago, and had to have a tumor removed on his nose.
This condition also causes his immune system to be very weak. Since October 2023, he has felt his face swelling within a few hours.
“For several hours, my face started to swell, my lips swelled, I could barely speak. My whole face felt like it was burning,” said the patient, quoted from the page. First Coast NewsWednesday (21/2/2024).
“I started having nosebleeds, nosebleeds constantly. I couldn’t even get up to go to the bathroom with my nose starting to bleed,” he continued.
Feeling that his condition continued to worsen, the man immediately went to HCA Florida Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. When examined by the ENT doctor on duty at the time, David Carlson, there was movement in his nose.
“I kept checking further to get a closer look at the cause of the nosebleed, so we took the camera and looked inside the nose and that’s when things changed dramatically,” he said.
The camera image shows dozens of live insects eating the inside of the man’s nose and sinus cavities. The insects also defecate in the same place.
Dr Carlson said the insect larvae shed tissue and feces. This creates a toxic environment that causes inflammation, which is seen due to significant abnormalities in the patient’s nose. According to him, it was not a microscopic insect.
“The sizes varied, but the bigger one was the same size as the tip of my little finger. I knew he was in big trouble, there was erosion occurring near the base of the skull, very close to his eyes and brain,” he explained.
“There are larvae in the nose that are running around and looking for a place to eat, and there are also some that have hidden in the tissue.”
