Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced Sunday that he is quitting the race for the Republican presidential nomination and will support the front-runner in the race, former President Donald Trump.

DeSantis announced the decision in a video on his Network X (formerly Twitter) account.

In the video, DeSantis says that after finishing second in the Iowa caucuses, he can’t “ask our supporters to give up their time and sacrifice their resources if we don’t have a clear plan to win.”

In the first caucuses, a party election for a presidential candidate, in Iowa a week ago, DeSantis came in second place, while Trump won by a huge margin. Trump won 51% of the GOP vote in this state, DeSantis only 21%.

“It is clear that the majority of voters in the Republican primaries want to give Donald Trump a second chance.” […] I support him because we can’t go back to the Republican old guard of yore or the repackaged corporatism that Nicky Haley represents,” DeSantis said.

Ron DeSantis accompanied the video with his speech about leaving the campaign with a quote from Winston Churchill: “Success is not final, failure is not fatal, what matters is the courage to continue.”

Ron DeSantis withdrew from the election just two days before the GOP primary in the second state, New Hampshire. However, one of the latest polls showed that in this state he would finish third with five percent, far behind both Trump (50%) and moderate candidate Niki Haley (34%).

Now Trump has only one more serious rival left in the fight for the nomination from the Republican Party – the former governor of South Carolina and former US ambassador to the UN, Indian-American Niki Haley.
