The Baía Sul hospital, in Florianópolis, zeroed the number of admissions by the new coronavirus (Covid-19) for the first time in 16 months. The information was released by the institution this Monday (12) and treated as a “rare moment” since the beginning of the pandemic in Brazil in March 2020.

“The Baía Sul Hospital does not have any hospitalized patient with an active, confirmed or suspected case of Covid-19“, informed the hospital in a note. In addition, the site had already been registering a drop in the number of cases for at least a month.

According to the hospital’s CEO, dr. Sérgio Marcondes Brincas, more than 800 patients were admitted to the site for complications of the disease.

“After more than 8 thousand confirmed patients treated at the Emergency Care Unit throughout 2020 and 2021, with more than 800 admissions and more than 640 discharges, we can celebrate the prediction of a better future”, comments Brincas.

For the director, one of the main reasons for the improvement of the scenario is the advance of vaccination in Santa Catarina, especially for people in the risk group, such as the elderly and those with comorbidities. This group was given priority in the vaccination schedule.

Until 6:50 pm this Monday, according to data from Government of Santa Catarina Vaccinometer, more than one million people have already received the two doses of the immunizing agent against the disease, totaling 13.87% of the population in the state. The total coverage – people with both doses – of the priority group is 39.46%.

“This is a collective victory, achieved through the engagement of society and the immunization process, which are essential to contain the spread of the virus. With the advance of vaccination and the maintenance of preventive measures, the perspective is even better”, concludes Brincas
