The opening ceremony, a “magical night, full of light, colours and emotions,” saw nearly 2,000 athletes from 31 countries compete. Among the standout performances was wheelchair tennis player Francisco Cayulef, who secured a gold medal in the quad singles competition on home soil, contributing to Chile’s top ranking in the medal table. Gustavo Fernandez and Dana Mathewson also claimed gold in the men’s and women’s singles, respectively, virtually securing their spots in the Paris 2024 Paralympics.

The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games saw further triumphs for Chilean athletes.Francisca Crovetto secured a gold medal in women’s skeet shooting, earning her top honors at the Chilean Sports Gala for the best season of any Chilean athlete. Similarly, Katherinne Wollermann’s gold medal in paracanoeing also earned her top recognition at the gala. Other notable achievements included Yasmani Acosta’s silver medal in Greco-Roman wrestling and alberto Abarza’s three bronze medals in swimming.
Beyond the medals, Florencia Pérez, a veteran wheelchair tennis player, received a ”Special Achievement Award” at the Chilean Sports Gala. Her accolades included gold medals at the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games (both singles and mixed doubles), a bronze medal at the Paris 2024 paralympics, and multiple wins in ITTF world tours. Pérez’s coach, Esteban Carrasco, praised not only her talent and dedication but also the contributions of her multidisciplinary team, including sports psychologist Eliot Brito and physical trainer Gianni lioi, and her parents, Lorena Sepúlveda and Jorge Pérez. He noted that Pérez aims to reach the number one world ranking by 2025, having already climbed to third place.
