Florence –
Italy is starting to be overwhelmed by the number of tourists coming to its historic cities. Don’t want to have a fate like that Venicethis city is making a new policy.
Reporting from CNN on Wednesday (13/9/2023), mass tourism began to mushroom in Europe, in particular Italia. Many properties are starting to open accommodation for tourists on short-term rentals.
Kota Florence don’t want that. Florence has announced plans to ban new short-term rentals like Airbnb.
The new law will be voted on next week and is expected to take effect in November. The policy would also prohibit other properties in the city’s historic center.
Florence Mayor Dario Nardella said the law was crucial in addressing the emergency situation of total deregulation.
“We are witnessing progressive growth in tourists which has become increasingly evident since the pandemic,” he said.
Figures from the city council show that 75% of Florence’s short-term rentals are concentrated in just 5% of the city, the birthplace of the Renaissance and a UNESCO world heritage site. The law aims to address the 5% problem.
Since the law was drafted, there have been 4,000 new properties registered in Florence. Some even operate illegally.
Authorities took this action to protect Florence’s global heritage site.
“We are implementing simple measures in the UNESCO area to fulfill our responsibility to protect the cultural and material identity of the centro storico and cushion the impact of rising rents across the city,” Nardella said.
An Airbnb spokesperson also spoke out.
“We are aware of the challenges facing historic cities across Italy and we want to help. We have proposed national regulations for short-term rentals in Italy that are clear and easy to follow and will ensure responsible sharing of homes in every city,” he said.
