The issue is a particular way in which flowers are packaged and the conditions in which the roses are stored during transport. By playing with the oxygen and ethylene content, among other things, flowers can be put into a kind of dormancy, so that they no longer develop and therefore also come fresh from the boat after a long journey from Africa.
Floration had long suspected that the technology developed by them, which it had already recorded in 2007, was used on transports by FloraHolland, without any compensation. In September last year, the company had a container seized and checked a number of packaging. According to Floration, it emerged from this that the recorded technology of the company has been copied.
Floration’s top woman Susanna Blanche Jones explains that the company has lost millions in revenue. She is especially not happy with the monopoly position of the auction in areas such as transport.
FloraHolland says the issue has been around for some time. The auction company says it has done little with sea transport over the years, but that this has changed due to the corona crisis. “We believe that the way in which we provide transport is slightly different. The auction is looking forward to the lawsuit with confidence.
The case will be brought before the court in The Hague on March 2.
