It took Francisco Baixauli two days to walk 30km from his job in the town of <a href="https://www.world-today-news.com/a-couple-arrested-in-valencia-for-robbing-a-taxi-driver-with-the-mata-leon-method/" title="A couple arrested in Valencia for robbing a taxi driver with the 'Mata León' method”>Alfafar, wading through mud, debris and damaged cars left behind by devastating floods in eastern Spain that have claimed lives to at least 158 people, according to a newer count.

His arrival, with a rucksack on his back, brought tears of joy to his wife and son, who feared for his life, especially in the early moments of the bad weather on Tuesday.

“We were very afraid because my husband was not coming home and we did not know where he was, we saw the water flooding everything and its level rising, we saw people in despair, some running to reach their homes, cars they have been swept away by the muddy water on the streets,” said his wife Angela Muñoz.

“Then there was a power outage, we had no water and we were trapped there not knowing what was going to happen.”

Spain has issued another storm warning for parts of the eastern region of Valencia, where a year’s worth of rain fell in eight hours on Tuesday. Rescuers are continuing operations combing flooded areas and searching abandoned cars for missing people after the deadliest floods in Spain’s modern history.

Returning from the port of Sagunto, 53-year-old Baixauli had to stay in a district just 5 kilometers from Alfafar, “the only place I could reach”.

“I called my wife and son and knew they were fine at home. I couldn’t get there until today,” he added.

Reunited again and accompanied by their dog, the family inspected the nearby streets, where some of their neighbors were cleaning up the debris.

“We haven’t had water until today and we don’t have electricity, we’ve been eating sandwiches for two days… the food in the fridge is rotten and we can’t even take a bath,” Muñoz described.
