Floods in Mojokerto: Rescue Efforts and Updates on Sadar River Embankment Breakdown

MOJOKERTO – Floods due to the breakdown of the Sadar River embankment caused the Mojokerto Regency and Mojokerto City areas to be flooded to a height of 40 – 100 cm on Wednesday (6/3).

For Mojokerto Regency, the worst hit point due to flooding is Mojosari District.

The 25 meter long embankment of the Sawa river collapsed and caused 500 houses and 97 hectares to be flooded in Kedung Gempol Village, Mojosari.

In an effort to rescue the affected residents, the East Java Regional Police’s Water and Air Police Directorate (Ditpolairud) immediately deployed SAR personnel to back up efforts to rescue residents by the Mojokerto Police.

Director of Polairud Polda Jatim, Kombes Pol Arman Asmara, SH, SIK said that his party had sent SAR personnel along with equipment in the form of rubber boats, cars and motorbikes to evacuate residents affected by the flood.

“Yesterday we sent seven SAR personnel to Mojokerto to join colleagues from the TNI, BPBD and Mojokerto Police,” said Kombes Arman, Thursday (7/2).

Commissioner Arman also said that his party would continue to monitor developments in the flood disaster in two areas, namely Mojokerto Regency and City.

“We will continue to monitor developments, and we will continue to make efforts to save residents, of course in coordination with the local government,” said Commissioner Arman.

Meanwhile, Mojokerto Police Chief, AKBP Wahyudi, through Mojokerto Police Kasihumas, Inspector Abdul Wahid, said that his party and the ranks of Forkopimca Mojoanyar and Mojosari would also continue to monitor conditions at the affected locations.

“Currently 3,000 people have to evacuate to safer places and wait for the water to recede to return to their homes,” said Inspector Wahid.

He said that the breach of the Sadar River embankment of approximately 25 meters was what caused several sub-districts in Mojokerto Regency and City to be flooded.

“To evacuate residents, the Mojokerto Police were backed up by the East Java Regional Police’s Ditpolairud and Police using a National Police backbone car to a safer place,” said Inspector Wahid.

Until this news was written, there were still 2 sub-districts that were worst hit, namely Pungging Sub-district and Mojosari Sub-district.

“For the Mojoanyar sub-district, it has subsided somewhat,” said Inspector Wahid.

Kasihumas Mojokerto Police also said that the Mojokerto Police still places personnel at several points on standby.

“Our personnel are alerted, both in refugee camps, public kitchens, and several points where river water overflows,” explained Inspector Wahid.

Meanwhile, the local government is currently repairing the broken Sadar River embankment.
