Floods due to rain leave 339 dead since June in Niger

Niger. Torrential rains in Niger have left 339 dead and more than 1.1 million displaced since June, state media reported on Tuesday.

The Ministry of the Interior indicated in September that there were 273 dead and more than 700,000 affected by the downpours in the African country.

But since September 23, floods have impacted more than 1.1 million people, leaving 339 dead and 383 injured, state news agency ANP reported on Tuesday, citing Niger’s civil protection service.

Areas across the country were affected, including the capital Niamey, where nine people died.

The rains also caused “major losses” of equipment, livestock and food, the source said.

The government had to postpone the start of the school year at the end of October due to damage to schools and the number of displaced families.

The rainy season in Niger usually extends from June to September and often has tragic consequences. In 2022 it caused the death of 195 people.

Scientists warn that climate change caused by fossil fuel emissions is making extreme weather events, such as floods, more frequent, intense and long-lasting.
