Flooding in Times Square: 127-year-old water pipe break causes chaos in New York City

A 127-year-old water pipe located under Times Square in the New York City broke early Tuesday, and caused floods in the streets of the center and in the busiest metro station in the city.

The half meter wide pipe broke under the 40th Street and the seventh avenue at 3 in the morning, reported Rohit Aggarwalacommissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection of the city of NY.

The water was only inches deep in the street, but videos posted on social media showed floodwaters cascading down the metro station in Times Square down the stairs and through the vents.

The water turned the ditches through which the subway tracks pass into small rivers and soaked the platforms.

The teams from the Department of Environmental Protection took about an hour to find the source of the leak and cut off the water, reported Aggarwala.

The excavation left a large hole at the intersection of 40th Street and Seventh Avenuewhere workers excavated with heavy machinery to reach the broken section of pipe.

Although that intersection remained closed to traffic, the surrounding streets were opened at rush hour.

However, subway service has been suspended across much of Manhattan on the 1, 2 and 3 lines, which run directly under the broken pipe. Service was restored by noon, reported the CEO of New York City Transit, Richard Davey.
