Some 100 floods, landslides, mudslides and other incidents have been caused in Costa Rica so far today by the intense rains of the season, which have increased in recent hours due to the effects of the so-called Central American Monsoon Gyre.

The rainfall since Friday was mostly caused by this typical event in the region, which scholars describe as having a circulation pattern very similar to a cyclone, with the winds turning counterclockwise, the National Meteorological Institute (IMN) said.

Damage caused by flooding, river flooding and other consequences of the rains forced the National Emergency Commission (CNE) to activate its municipal committees and set up shelters to assist affected families, the source added, as quoted by Diario Extra.

“The rains during the afternoon and evening of Friday and since early Saturday morning, mainly affected the central-northern regions of Limón and Guanacaste, the Northern Zone, the Central Valley and territories of the Southern Zone,” said the president of the CNE, Alejandro Picado.

“The influence of the Central American Monsoon Gyre – explained the IMN – will extend over the weekend and early next week. The rains are expected to intensify especially towards the Pacific side from Saturday afternoon-night until early Sunday morning.”

The Central American Monsoon Gyre, which also coincides with the rainfall associated with the tropical waves of the time detected by authorities in the sector, increased rainfall, especially on the Pacific side.

The effects of the atmospheric phenomenon cause unstable conditions, especially in the northwestern area of Guanacaste and in the southwestern area of Puntarenas, located at the extreme ends of the country.
