Flood Subscriptions Make Cawang Residents Memorize Where Water Comes From

Jakarta

Settlements of residents in RT 15/RW 03 Jalan Taman Harapan, CawangEast Jakarta is a regular area flood. To the extent that, residents in the area know where the flood water comes from.

It is known that the flood inundated residents’ settlements in RT 15/RW 03 from Friday (24/2/2023) to Saturday (25/3). The water level reaches 30 cm.

Secretary of RT 15/ RW 03 Imron (40) said residents are used to flooding because their area is close to the Ciliwung River. He said flooding occurs depending on the weather.

“Floods for us here are normal. We can’t say often, because it depends on the weather and nature,” he said.

“If the weather in Jakarta is rainy, the sea is high, the water cycle doesn’t work, that’s why we flood here. But if the sea is not high, the water keeps flowing, we don’t flood here,” continued Imron.

Imron hopes that there will be a permanent solution so that the flood does not recur. However, he realized coping with flooding was not an easy thing.

“We hope that there will be no more flooding. Every year there will be an absence of flooding. When it comes to the causes of flooding, it’s complex, just like the solution is also complex,” he said.

Imron also said that previously his area was only flooded if there was water due to the overflow of the Ciliwung River from Bogor. But now, he said, floods are becoming more frequent, even though it only rains in Jakarta.

He said residents always check the online flood monitoring site belonging to the DKI Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD). He said residents could also differentiate between floods caused by rain in Jakarta and floods triggered by water from Bogor or Depok.

“Here, the worry is flooding, if it rains it’s usually not too high,” he explained.

“If the water is clear, it’s only raining in Jakarta. If there’s a lot of trash and the mud content is high, it’s a shipment, so we’ll clean it up extra,” continued Imron.

The resident whose house was flooded, Eva (32), said that the water had receded on Friday afternoon. However, the water rose again when it rained Friday evening.

“So yesterday he went up, up and down, up again, now he’s as big as this (chest height),” he said.

Eva also said that there is a difference between floods caused by rain in Jakarta and floods caused by water from Bogor. He said that floods triggered by water from the Bogor area could submerge his house for days.

“It’s better to rain here, than rain in Bogor, it’s sent immediately. If the rain rises here, it continues to recede again. If for example a shipment from Bogor or Depok, never mind, it takes days, I have to leave the house,” said Eva.

The reason residents are forced to survive in the area despite frequent flooding. Read next page>>
