Flood stress test successfully passed in the Marina Garden Dresden

The Marina Garden building ensemble in Dresden has passed its first flood stress test. In mid-September, the level of the Elbe rose to 6.10 meters and the city administration declared flood alert level 3. Although the water level remained below the originally forecast values, it was still the highest water level that the building ensemble on Leipziger Strasse had ever experienced. The flood protection concept has proven itself under real conditions.

The Elbe, one of the longest rivers in Europe, is subject to large fluctuations in water levels. The current flood resulted from heavy rainfall in the mountains, especially in the Czech Republic and Germany. Frequent dry periods increase the irregular water levels. For cities like Dresden, which are located directly on the Elbe, river activity represents a permanent challenge.

The risk of flooding was already taken into account when planning the Marina Garden. The building ensemble was built using a flood-adapted design. According to Helena Raupach, sales manager at CTR Marina Dresden GmbH, the flood protection concept proved to be fully functional in September. The renaturation area prevented water from entering the buildings and the underground car park. Only the playground between the Elbe cycle path and the buildings was flooded. On September 23rd, alert level 1 was lifted in Dresden. The playground has already been cleaned and the “gravel” will be replaced soon.

An important part of the flood protection measures in the Marina Garden is the timely clearance of movable objects on the Elbe side. “We are well prepared for future floods,” emphasized Raupach. “Our residents don’t have to worry about their property or their health.”

Marina Garden has thus proven that it poses no danger to residents even at critical water levels.
