Heavy rains covered the United Arab Emirates, known for its desert landscapes. Due to the fact that the local infrastructure is not at all designed for minimally significant rains, the main highways and streets of the city of Dubai went under water, reports Associated Press.

The rain started on Tuesday night, turning some streets into huge ponds due to the complete lack of rain drainage. Due to strong winds and flooding of the runway, the Dubai International Airport – one of the busiest in the world – stopped working.

Schools in the UAE were closed ahead of the storm, and government officials mostly worked remotely if they could. Many workers also stayed at home, although some ventured out. The streets are full of abandoned cars – they stalled after “swallowing” water due to the fact that the drivers apparently did not know that such a thing was even possible. Numerous cases of flooding of first floors and basements throughout the country are also reported.

It is noted that more than 120 millimeters of rain fell in Dubai by the evening, which is the annual norm for this desert country. And more is expected in the coming hours. Although the UAE is known for its classic sand dunes that cover most of the territory, the country does experience some rain – during the cooler winter months. But their intensity cannot be compared to European rains, let alone tropical rains.

The flood in Russia: the latest news

As UNIAN wrote, the southern Urals and Western Siberia are currently experiencing the largest flood in decades. Due to systemic corruption in Russia, local authorities were unable to protect citizens from a natural disaster that caused extensive economic damage.

Among the most affected cities is the district center of Orsk in the Orenburg region. As it turned out recently, the mayor of the city, who is allegedly involved in the embezzlement of money for the construction of an anti-flood dam, has real estate precisely in Dubai. He evacuated his family there – away from the flood and the Russian mobilization.
