Flights within the European Union will soon be able to offer a 5G connection – IT Pro – News

European airlines will soon be able to install 5G technology on board their aircraft. The legislation on mobile communications has been adapted by the European Commission (EC) to the latest standards.

In a statement writes European Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton that ‘the sky is no longer the limit when it comes to high-speed, high-capacity connections’. As an example, the EC mentions the installation of a picocell in the aircraft cabin which transmits telephone calls, text messages and other data via a satellite network to a ground mobile network.

The Commission also has a decision on opening up the 5 GHz frequencies to cars, buses and other vehicles. The European Member States have until 30 June 2023 to make the 5GHz frequency accessible to road traffic.
