Air traffic between Munich Airport and destinations in the USA has developed enormously and continues to grow: in the summer of 1992, the year the airport opened in Erdinger Moos, there were 39 take-offs per week to five destinations; currently there are 140 take-offs to 14 airports. On August 26, 2024, the airport counted the 50 millionth passenger who has traveled nonstop to the United States since the airport was founded.
Lufthansa, American Airlines, Delta Airlines and United currently offer nonstop flights to and from Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Detroit, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, New York-JFK, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington-Dulles. Lufthansa operates four daily flights – to Boston, Los Angeles, New York and Washington – with the Airbus A380.
Seven destinations are served from Munich several times a day: Chicago up to three times, twice a day to Charlotte, Denver, Newark, San Francisco and Washington-Dulles. New York-JFK is served twice on three days a week.
44,000 seats are offered per week and direction, and seat occupancy is currently more than 90 percent. In 2023, the threshold of three million passengers per year in nonstop traffic with the USA was exceeded for the first time – since June 2022, the monthly number of passengers has been higher than in the pre-Corona year of 2019. In July 2024, more than 355,000 passengers flew to and from destinations in the USA.
