NY.– A power outage at a terminal at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport lasted for a second day Friday after some flights were canceled or diverted, including one that turned around and was sent back to New Zealand after almost made it to the United States.
Airport operators tweeted Thursday night that Terminal 1, which handles some of the airport’s international flights, will remain closed Friday “due to electrical issues.”
The blackout was caused by an electrical panel failure that started a small fire, which was quickly extinguished, according to authorities.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which manages New York’s major airports, said it was working to assign affected flights to JFK’s four other active terminals.
The agency did not provide a rough figure for how many flights were canceled or diverted, but thousands of travelers are likely to have been affected.
