Since its release, the last installment of Flight Simulator has amazed players with its realism. That of planes, obviously, but not only: the weather phenomena are also superb. So when Hurricane Laura stepped out of its way, players didn’t hesitate to make the real-time weather system profitable.
One of the most immersive features of Flight Simulator since the 2004 version is certainly its dynamic “Real-World Weather” option, which allows to import the real weather conditions directly into the game. And inevitably, this function gave ideas to the players of the last edition of the game with the passage Hurricane Laura. The more daring virtual pilots have therefore gathered in the Gulf of Mexico to flirt with the hurricane – since downgraded to a tropical storm. Well, they got it, because the images produced are breathtaking. Some have plunged straight to the heart of the phenomenon, others have flown over or bypassed it, always with a result that is strikingly realistic.

For observers, it is also a great opportunity to become aware of the extent of this phenomenon… but without the turbulence. It goes without saying that no real sane pilot would venture into the area, so it is all the more enjoyable to dive into this meteorological monster.

Only downside: the damage is not visible on the device. A disappointment for those who wanted to watch their old cuckoo disintegrate little by little by rushing straight into the storm … but it is a constant on the license Flight Simulator, which has a complicated relationship with the concept of crash.

A technical exhibition signed Meteoblue
This technical feat is made possible by the real-time weather system described above. The latter was born out of a partnership with the Swiss company Meteoblue. This subdivides the world into approximately 250 million zones in which meteorological parameters are recorded in real time. And we have to admit that the company did a great job. Meteorological phenomena are incredibly precise and are among the best arguments in the game. Asked by The Verge, founder Mathias Müller explains that he is delighted with the aspect of weather phenomena in the game. Enthusiastic, he even explains that he would like to integrate even more details and weather parameters into the game. He concedes, however, that the implementation in the game is “Extremely complex”, and therefore long.
