Flight on which ‘El Mayo’ traveled was not planned by US agency: SSPC

Mexico City. The Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, released a report provided by the State Department on the arrests of drug traffickers, Ismael The May Zambada and Joaquín Guzmán López, according to whom the US authorities had had unconfirmed reports that the latter was planning to surrender but had never made his intention concrete until then.

The report highlights that the flight that left from Mexican territory “was not planned by any government agency” of the United States.

During the presidential conference, the official said that the Mexican government requested an official report from its U.S. counterpart to know exactly what happened. Mexico is waiting for confirmation from the U.S. government about the circumstances of time and place, as well as how the events occurred, said Rodriguez.

After confirming that Mexico did not intervene at all in the capture of the two drug traffickers, he stressed that the Attorney General’s Office opened an investigation file to reconstruct how the trips occurred. “It is planned to obtain statements from lawyers and witnesses of the events. The Security Cabinet will follow up on the investigations until the development of the events in which the two drug traffickers were involved is clarified. The May and Joaquín were placed in custody, in an action in which the Mexican government did not participate.”

Reading from the official U.S. document, the official mentioned that last Thursday, “U.S. law enforcement agencies were informed at 10:30 a.m. that Joaquín Guzmán López was planning to surrender upon entering U.S. territory on a private flight. At 2:35 a.m., U.S. authorities were informed that Joaquín Guzmán López had taken off from Mexico with the intention of surrendering. U.S. authorities had no advance notice of this flight and had no independent confirmation that Joaquín Guzmán López was actually on the flight.”

When asked specifically, Rodriguez did not confirm that the flight that he had initially identified as taking off from Hermosillo was in fact the plane that Guzmán López was on at the Santa Teresa airport near El Paso, Texas.

The American report details that at 2:40 pm, “once the plane was in the air, they were informed that Ismael was possibly also The May Zambada could have been on the aircraft without any independent confirmation that he was on board,” according to the authorities of that country.

The flight from Mexico landed at 4:24 pm in Santa Teresa, this airport on the outskirts of El Paso, “The flight was not planned by any US government agency,” the official report highlights.

“Alerted after the plane took off, US authorities arrived at the aircraft in Santa Teresa. Two passengers… Authorities detained the two passengers when they got off the plane.”

The Secretary of Security stressed that “Mexico was notified as soon as it was confirmed that both Joaquín Guzmán López and Ismael The May Zambada were the two passengers on the plane. Once their identity was confirmed, US personnel contacted Mexican authorities and the embassy and sent photos of suspects to the security department with whom they have regular collaboration.”

-Did the flight actually leave Hermosillo or not?

-Indeed, as I said before, it is part of the investigations of the FGR, which will take into account airports of other entities and those who have been witnesses in this case. It is part of the investigations of the FGR.

-It is not ruled out yet?

-Let’s wait for what the FGR says

-Is the identity of the pilot confirmed?

-It is part of the FGR investigations but we are waiting for more information on these questions, flight, route, the breakage.

Rodriguez said they are waiting for more information from the U.S. authorities, “we will continue to inform the people of Mexico without hiding anything.”
