Flight of a Decommissioned Boeing 727 Cockpit Raises Eyebrows – The Truth Behind the Confusion Revealed by Flightradar24

Could the cockpit, separated from a decommissioned aircraft, end up in the sky? Common sense says that this is impossible, but the other day the famous online radar Flightradar24 recorded exactly this.

The flying cockpit of a decommissioned Boeing 727 aircraft with the number OY-SES illustrated the flight from the capital of Iceland, Reykjavik, to the Danish city of Odense. At the same time, in the information about the flight, the online radar indicated that it was carried out by another airliner – Embraer Phenom 300.

Already confused? Flightradar24 explained what really happened.

“No, this is not a flying cockpit,” the aircraft tracking service said on its Twitter account.

Flightradar24 partners with aviation photography service jetphotos.com, from which it takes the most recent image of an aircraft with the required registration.

Sometimes, after the aircraft is written off, the number is reused for another aircraft. As a result, the flight description indicates the name of the new aircraft, but the flight is illustrated by a photograph of the old airliner.

This happened in this case too – a Boeing 727 with the number OY-SES was written off and disposed of, the number was transferred to a new Embraer Phenom 300 aircraft, but in the photo database there was only a photograph of the old airliner during disposal

Flightradar24 noted that the problem in such cases is resolved after uploading a photo of the new aircraft to jetphotos.com. As soon as this happens, the online radar will begin to illustrate flights with a photo of the correct airliner.
