During a flight from Heraklion to Frankfurt, the captain of a Eurowings Discover flight became unwell. The newly appointed copilot took control.
As the flight approached Frankfurt am Main Airport, the copilot reported it incident to air traffic control. The Airbus A320, registration D-AIUT, landed at the German airport without any problems. The new pilot parked the aircraft on the platform, where an air ambulance was waiting. The helicopter took the captain to a nearby hospital. The incident had no further consequences for other air traffic at and around the airport.
Southwest
In March, the captain of a Southwest Airlines flight also lost consciousness. Half an hour after departure from Las Vegas, he became unwell. A few minutes later, according to standard procedure, the occupants were asked for assistance. Coincidentally, one of the passengers was a pilot himself and came forward to assist the copilot. There was also a nurse on board, who helped care for the captain. In Las Vegas, emergency services were ready to take him to the hospital. Southwest praised its employees for their professionalism and expressed appreciation for the passengers’ patience and understanding.
Pilots are trained to land an aircraft on their own, as was the case with the Eurowings Discover flight. Yet it is not uncommon for pilots traveling as passengers to assist in such situations.
